For media organisations navigating uncertainty, the ability to understand, accept and lead change is no longer optional. It is becoming one of the most important leadership capacities for teams trying to stay relevant, resilient and connected to their audiences.
This is especially important for local and independent media, where teams are often stretched, resources are limited, and change can feel both necessary and overwhelming.
Digital transformation, shifting audience habits, new technologies, platform dependency and fragile business models continue to put pressure on media organisations to adapt — often while they are already operating under significant strain.
Felixe Nova’s contribution to RNTC learning activities
Felixe Nova contributed to this important conversation through a lecture on change management for digital media leaders, delivered as part of RNW Media RNTC Media Training Centre’s educational activities.
The session explored why change can be both inspiring and exhausting, why individuals and teams often resist change even when they recognise its necessity, and how leaders can respond with greater empathy, clarity and intention.
Change management does not remove uncertainty or solve complex organisational challenges overnight. However, it helps leaders better understand the human, organisational and strategic dynamics behind change.
When these dynamics are recognised, resistance is no longer treated as failure or lack of motivation. Instead, it becomes valuable information about what people need in order to move forward.
For media organisations, this means creating space for more intentional leadership: leadership that listens, communicates clearly, builds trust, supports teams through transition, and connects change efforts to a shared sense of purpose.
It also means recognising that audience-centricity, agility and collaboration are no longer optional, but essential for media organisations that want to remain relevant, resilient and impactful.
Supporting organisations through change
The lecture was part of a wider inspiration session on leading change in digital media organisations, alongside an insightful conversation moderated by RNW Media's Boris van Westering with Rachael Akidi Okwir, Senior Media Consultant and founder of Reebo Consult.
In addition to delivering this lecture, Felixe Nova also contributed to the development of RNW Media's Digital Media Leadership online course, supporting the creation of practical educational materials designed to help media professionals strengthen their leadership capacity in times of transformation.
For Felixe Nova, this work reflects a broader commitment to supporting media organisations, civil society organisations and mission-driven teams as they navigate change, strengthen internal resilience and develop more sustainable ways of working.
